Bridging the Gap: Coalescing Research into Educational Labs for the Application of Machine Learning Methodologies to Cybersecurity Threats
An NSF-funded effort to turn peer-reviewed cybersecurity and machine learning research into safe, cloud-based virtual labs that give students hands-on experience without real-world risk. This project laid the technical groundwork that several of our other initiatives build on.
GAME-AMD4CYB: Gamified, AI-Enabled Cybersecurity Laboratories for Experiential Learning at Scale
A proposed extension of our cybersecurity lab ecosystem that adds game-based learning, so students learn advanced AI-and-security topics through structured challenges and friendly competition. We're studying whether this approach improves learning, motivation, and engagement compared to traditional lab formats. An NSF proposal has been submitted; for now the work continues with the lab's own resources.

Research into generating realistic, synthetic password data for security research and education — without ever using real, breached passwords. The goal is to give students and researchers safer, more representative datasets for studying password security. Turning Labtainer, a single-user cybersecurity lab framework, into a multi-user system that runs on our Jetstream2/OpenStack cloud — so many students can run the same labs independently on one shared server, with no local install required.
